Pinewood Derby Race - Cub Scouts Pack 26 Savannah, Georgia Wilmington Island

Welcome Racers

It's time for the pinewood derby race on Saturday Febuary 27th at the Church! You will receive your prinwood derby kit at the December pack meeting. Be sure to read this web page which includes the rules, help, speed tips and more. The most important part is to have fun and spend time with your son!

Start Time

Weigh in will start at 8:00 with racing to start around 10:00. Prizes will be awarded at the end of racing so boys should plan to attend the entire race. We anticipate it will last about 2 hours.

Concessions (cofee, juice and pastries) will be available for sale. We will also have hot dogs and chips available

Parent Race

This is the second year we will have an additional pinewood derby race just for the parents and siblings! It will be on Friday the day before (26th) with weigh in at 6:00pm and the race will start about 7:00pm. Each parent and sibling may race a car following the same rules as posted below. They must be present to race the car. The whole family is welcome to come and watch!

Please note, the cars racing Friday night will be held at the Church after the race is complete. You will be able to pickup your car after the scout's race on Saturday. Also, you can bring your son's car in Friday night to weigh it but you will not be able to test run it down the track. So it's best to keep it at home unless you need to weigh it.

The parents will need to purchase their pinewood derby kit from the council store here in Savannah. The cost of the kit is about $4. The scouts will receive their kit free at the December pack meeting.

Rules

Be sure to read and follow all of the rules so your car is not disqualified at inspection before the race. Each pinewood derby kit comes with instructions in the box with the rules. Be sure to read below for further rules.

Weighing The Car:

The weight of the car cannot exceed 5.00 Ounces. Many of the scales only go to the tenths in the reading. Our scale along with the ones used in the district and council races will go to the hundreds position. So if you use a scale that only goes to the tenths, it may show 5.0 as the weight. But when placed on our scale, it could show 5.01 or higher which is too heavy.

This happened alot last year so people were working on their cars alot on race day to get it within 5.00 Ounces. We will have many chances for you to weigh your car using our scale before the race. I just wanted everyone to be aware of this. And believe it or not, the scale at the post office seemed to be the worse scale to use - makes you wonder how much extra your paying in postage! (smile)

Pinewood Derby Awards

Every scout that participates in the pinewood derby race will get a patch and a ribbon just for racing. For the race, every den will race against other scouts in the same den. So there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for each den. Trophies will be given to the top three winners in each den. Next, all of these scouts will continue to race for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for the pack. These winners will receive trophies also. So there are a total of eighteen trophies to be given out at the race.

We also have eight other awards that are given out to scouts. Each of these will receive a trophie. So now thats twenty-six trophies total that will be awarded! The eight categories are:

  • Best Paint Job
  • Most Original Design
  • Best Workmanship
  • Most Unusual
  • Funniest
  • Best Fuel Economy (slow poke!)
  • Most Aerodynamic
  • Best Of Show

Just remember, everyone is a winner in Cub Scouts!

More Questions answered:

Many people have been asking about the wheels and the posibility of thinning them any. Wheels and axles can be smoothed and polished to remove the manufacturing defects. Be careful not to take too much off - it will reduce the size and radius of the wheel.

Also, you cannot sand the outside of the wheels to angle them. They must be flat on the outside. See the wheel diagram on this page.

The official race inspectors have the right to disqualify those cars that do not meet these specifications. Car owners will be informed of the violations and given the opportunity to modify the car to meet these rules.
